7 Important Things To Consider Before Renting An Apartment

January 19th, 2016

Renting an apartment is a long process. There are things that you need to check or do first before you can sign the tenancy agreement. If you are about to rent your first apartment, below are some tips that can help you get the space you need or wanted.

Rental cost and affordability.

There are apartments out there that look so nice and awesome to live at. But the thing is it might be outside your budget. Yes, you might say that you can pay the rental fee for about 6 months or so but what if you plan to stay for few years? Always think about the future! The rule of thumb in here is to make a budget and stick to it!

Check the apartment personally.

Don’t sign or pay any rent without you checking the place personally. If someone asks you for a rental fee without you visiting it first, turn away immediately. This is a big red flag because it indicates a rental scam. Always remember, don’t buy (or rent) anything without you personally seeing the product (or the apartment) first!

Check the faucets, shower and toilets.

If you are visiting the apartment personally, make sure to try and test the faucets, showers and toilets. If you notice an issue, you can tell the landlord about it and ask them to fix it before you sign the rental agreement. This way, you can save yourself from the stress and headache caused by water-related problems.

Meet potential neighbors.

Meeting some of your potential neighbors is one way to gauge and get a good feel of your chosen apartment.  Try to talk with some of them and ask about the stuff you wanted to know about the apartment like the past tenants, the landlords and other potential neighbors in the area.

Check common walls.

If your apartment has common or shared walls, make sure to check and inspect them too. You don’t want to place your bed adjacent to the wall where your neighbor’s living room is set up and vice versa.

Check the community.

Don’t just visit the community where your chosen apartment is located at daytime. Make sure check it at nights and during weekends too! This way, you would know how safe or unsafe the location is during those hours or so.

Neighborhood Community

Take down notes and get some photos.

If you will visit the apartment personally, equip yourself with a handy notebook, pen and a smartphone. This way, you can take some photos of the whole apartment before you move in. The notes can also serve as a reminder for you and your landlord of what needs to be fix or how the apartment looks like before you sign the lease. This tip can save you from a lot of stress when you decide to leave.

Cellphone Notebook

With the above listed tips, you can be sure that you can live peacefully and happily in your chosen apartment.
