Read the apartment lease agreement carefully.

The lease explains the terms of rental, rental price per month, other charges, security deposit etc. It also includes the rules and regulations that come along with the apartment unit. Make sure to read it carefully and consider each and every aspect of it. If a word or a statement confuses you, ask the landlord or the apartment manager about it. Don’t sign the lease until you are satisfied and comfortable with it.

Think about your furniture.

Before moving in to your newly found apartment, take an inventory of the furniture that you’ll need. Start with your bedroom furniture, living room, kitchen and bathroom. Make a list of them and don’t forget to measure the area where furniture will be placed.  It’s also pretty important to consider the apartment’s theme and interior design when buying your own furniture.

Don’t forget your pets.

Not all apartment owners or managers allow pets inside their units. Some might impose a size or type rule. Some might even charge a fee for every pet you have. So make sure to ask about this first before signing up your lease. It’s also highly advisable to check the apartment community if its pet friendly.

Check the included utilities.

Some apartment includes cable and internet access at their rentals. Some also includes water and electricity. So better ask the apartment manager about the included utilities before signing up the lease. This way, you won’t be surprised about the extra charges and bills.

Consider mode of transportation.

If you have a vehicle, check out the apartment’s garage or parking lot. You must also check the nearest car care center in case you’ll need your vehicle fixed up. If you have no vehicle, then consider the available public transport. Also, it’s best to consider the travel time between your apartment and your school/office and other important establishments.

With these tips, apartment living for the first time can be quite easy.

One of the things I really liked about my former apt. was that it had an open air garage. Definitely nicer than carports.

These are all GREAT tips. I wish I’d known some of them when I was first out of college 15 years ago!

  3. Always, ask about pets. My mom’s friend didn’t read her lease and ended up having to get rid of all of her animals. Don’t assume!
